Aiming for a scent that lasts from sunrise to sunset? The best long-lasting perfumes deliver exactly that, and their staying power isn’t a matter of coincidence—it’s rooted in formulation. “Technically, the concentration of the perfume oil in the fragrance formulation creates the most long-lasting intensity,” Linda Levy, president of the Fragrance Foundation, tells Vogue. Long-lasting scents aren’t designed for fleeting impact but for sustained presence. Higher concentrations linger on skin and clothing, ensuring your fragrance follows you wherever you go. Longevity isn’t just about composition though—our individual body chemistry also impacts how long a scent lasts on us, and even how we perceive it to smell—so finding a fragrance that you like and has longevity may require road testing a few scents to see what works best for you.
As a self-proclaimed fragrance enthusiast (and frequent watcher of the perfume review side of TikTok), my preferences are just as strong as an Extrait de Parfum—and my appreciation began early. As a child, I played “perfume store” with my grandmother. The ritual was simple but instructive: We’d smell each bottle, decide whether it resonated, rank our favorites, and finally choose the one that felt right for an imaginary client. What I’ve learned is this: I prefer longer-lasting perfumes not to announce my presence with a scream, but to ensure my signature scent stays with me throughout the day. While there are lovely eau de toilettes and eau fraîches on the market, I’m less inclined to reach for them—let’s just say, I’m not into the quiet type.
Below, a curated edit of Vogue’s favorite long-lasting perfumes, with certifiable favorites from experts and editors alike.
According to Levy, the most common ranges from most intense to least are: parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne and eau fraiche. These categories serve as general rules of thumb, though parfums and EDPs can be intense depending on their particular formula concentration.
Does a perfume have to be an exclusif or extrait to be long-lasting?
Not necessarily. “There is a new language for describing the intensity of perfumes," Levy explains. “One of the biggest recent trends is for ultra-intense fragrances. As brands create new versions [of established scents], each becomes more intense than the prior releases. Generally, an extrait is a super concentrated formulation, with the highest percentage of the fragrance oil.”
That percentage, she explains, usually ranges from 20% to 40%. “Even within an extrait, there are still layers of intensity as exclusifs index on a specific note or ingredient to add depth.”
How many hours of wear-time do long-lasting fragrances have?
Levy explains that a long-lasting fragrance typically wears for about six to eight hours, so the scents with the most longevity can extend to ten hours and beyond. Though there is a caveat to note when considering if your perfume actually stands the test of time: going nose numb.
“Most people describe their personal fragrances fade more quickly, but that is not the actual case,” says Levy. “As we grow accustomed to the scents we apply, we tend to sense them less on ourselves, versus those we encounter throughout the day or evening.”
