A$AP Rocky Revives a Grail From the Archives: The PUMA Suede ’94

Not all archive revivals are created equal. While the PUMA Suede has seen countless reinterpretations since its debut at the 1968 Summer Olympics, the 1994 version has long occupied grail status among collectors. Now, A$AP Rocky is bringing it back.

What made the ‘94 so coveted wasn’t simply its age but the details. Most notably, it’s the only Suede to feature the full retro PUMA logo printed directly onto the quarter panel. Rocky’s version faithfully revives that signature alongside the longer toe box, heavily padded raw-edge tongue, slimmer tooling and original woven tongue label that defined the silhouette more than three decades ago. Rather than overdesigning the sneaker, Rocky is limiting his additions to a gold PUMA lace keeper and custom packaging, allowing the original shape to remain the focus.

The choice to revive the 1994 Suede is a fitting one. In New York, the model arrived during a moment when hip-hop, streetwear and downtown skate culture were all beginning to shape the city in ways that are still felt today and the Suede helped define that era’s uniform. “I remember when my mom bought me my first pair of Suedes,” Rocky shared. “Growing up in New York and seeing Walt Frazier with his style and his PUMA Suedes, they were the shoes. To tap into that ’90s nostalgia and bring them back with my own creative lens and special details — it’s great.”

Those looking to secure a pair early can do so at Rocky’s exclusive pre-launch pop-up at Joe’s Ginger in Manhattan’s Chinatown on July 15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT. It will be the only location globally selling the sneaker ahead of its wider release, which lands July 16 through PUMA, PUMA flagship stores and select premium retailers.
