The Story

Ben Stiller has officially confirmed a new multi-part documentary series detailing the history and culture of the New York Knicks. The upcoming event series is being developed in a prominent production partnership between independent studio A24, HBO and the NBA.

The highly anticipated television project arrives immediately after the New York Knicks secured their first historic NBA championship victory in 53 years. Directed by Stiller, the docuseries will comprehensively explore all eras of the iconic basketball franchise. According to an official synopsis from A24, the narrative will trace the full arc of the team from the grit of the 1990s through to the improbable, record-breaking postseason run that brought the title back to New York City.

The documentary will leverage unprecedented league access, exclusive interviews, and never-before-seen footage to offer a definitive look into one of basketball’s most passionate cultures. Stiller guest starred on Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s Roommates podcast and noted that he “did say ‘Knicks in 26.’” A lifelong courtside fixture, he revealed that he has already captured custom behind-the-scenes moments on his phone throughout the playoff run, “Obviously I’ve been shooting some stuff on my phone.” He added, “But it’s going to be about all eras of the Knicks, and this team obviously, there’s a culmination here, of something that’s been going on for a long time. It’s super exciting. It’s great to have had all this access to your team. We’re going to probably be shooting a little bit more during next season, and I’m going to hit you guys up for some interviews. It’s going to be over the next year that we’ll be working on it. A lot of people have wanted to make it happen for a long time.” Production and filming are slated to continue into the upcoming NBA season as the creative teams finalize the expansive sports project over the next year.

In an official synopsis from A24, it stated that the multi-part docuseries is expected to “trace the full arc of the franchise from the ’90s to the improbable, record-breaking run that finally returned a championship to New York” and will feature “unprecedented NBA access, never-before-seen footage, and a definitive look at one of basketball’s most iconic stories.”

The untitled New York Knicks docuseries is currently in production, with official streaming and broadcast release dates via HBO to be announced at a later time.
