Crystal Fox Joins Cast Of Hulu’s Cable Guy Pilot

EXCLUSIVE: Crystal Fox (His & Hers, The Big Door Prize) has joined the series regular cast of the untitled Cable Guy pilot inspired by the 1996 Jim Carrey movie of the same name, from Hulu and Sony Pictures Television. She joins the previously announced cast of Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr. and Natasha Rothwell.

Fox will portray Lynette, Steven (Wayans Jr.), and Gina’s (Rothwell) mother, who is concerned that her son is adrift after his break-up and finds herself going down various social media rabbit holes.

The project’s logline: In a world of endless streaming, binging, and algorithms, old-school cable technician Chip Douglas (Johnson) languishes alone — until Steven Stephens calls to have his cable turned back on, reconnecting Chip with a childhood friend he never forgot. The relationship gives each man something he’s been missing… until Chip’s enthusiasm turns into obsession. The show explores the darkly absurd side of modern-day male friendship.

While the series is inspired by the Carrey-led film, it’s not a remake. The creators and talent are fans of the original film and are creating something different that honors the original, similar to what Fargo did with the television show.

In addition to leading the series, Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. also executive produce. Rob Rosell and Joe Piarulli, and Luan Thomas serve as co-showrunners and co-wrote the pilot. Additional executive producers include Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty (Original Film, under overall deal at SPT). The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Fox is best known for her roles as Sgt. LuAnn Corbin from the long-running 1980s/90s series In the Heat of the Night, and as matriarch Hanna Young on Tyler Perry’s The Haves and Have Nots. She was most recently seen in the Netflix series His & Her’s, playing Tessa Thompson’s mother, and playing Mayor Izzy on The Big Door Prize for Apple TV.

Her first leading film role was as Grace Waters in A Fall From Grace on Netflix, along with her HBO debut as Elizabeth Howard in the 2nd season of Big Little Lies. Additional notable roles include Driving Miss Daisy, Burden, Separate But Equal starring Sidney Poitier, Mama Flora’s Family starring Cicely Tyson, and co-starring with Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen in the 2001 PBS theatrical adaptation of The Old Settler. Fox is repped by Artium Talent and attorney Jeff Bernstein.
