Paramount Pictures is breathing new life into a beloved Hasbro franchise, officially naming Danny McBride as the director for its upcoming G.I. Joe film. The high-profile project will see the actor and screenwriter make his theatrical feature directorial debut, working from his own completed script.
Known for his acclaimed comedy projects like HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals, McBride has long demonstrated his genre-spanning versatility. The filmmaker previously co-wrote the Blumhouse Halloween trilogy and is a self-proclaimed lifelong fan of the original G.I. Joe comic books and animated series. Paramount selected McBride’s pitch over a competing screenplay treatment by Max Landis, signaling a fresh creative direction for the IP.
The upcoming installment will serve as a standalone reboot, completely separate from the previous live-action trilogy which includes The Rise of Cobra (2009), Retaliation (2013), and the 2021 spin-off Snake Eyes. While specific plot points remain under wraps, the film is expected to explore a troop of Real American Heroes led by Duke as they take on the threat of Cobra.
