2. Michael (Universal/Lionsgate) $55.1M WW 84 territories ($28.2M int’l $26.9M dom), WW cume $789.2M ($468.1M int’l, $321.1M Dom/Wk 5Essentially, we’re waiting for Japan in June to take this Antoine Fuqua even closer to Bohemian Rhapsody’s final global of $911M. UK added $2.6M for a five-weekend running cume of $60M. Pic was No. 2 in Korea with $2.3M and a running cume of $7.8M in weekend 2. Australia added $2.2M for a cume of $26.7M in weekend 5. France had a fifth frame of $2.1M and cume of $44.4M through Sunday. Brazil added $2M in weekend 5 for a total of $28.4M, more than 3x the lifetimes of Oppenheimer. Michael has now surpassed Fast 7, 8 and 10 to become the 2nd biggest Universal film of all time in the country. Mexico grossed $1.8M in weekend 5 for a cume of $29M, also ahead of the final lifetime of Oppenheimer. Germany saw $1.4M fifth weekend for a $29.6M cume. Italy added $1.3M in fifth frame for a $27.1M total. Spain minted $1.1M in weekend 5 for a cume near $24M.
3. Dear You (Alibaba, China) $39.5M WW 1 territory, WW cume $151.5M/Wk 4This Hongchun Yan directed and co-written movie is a massive hit in the Middle Kingdom, made for a reported $2M. The pic, starring an unknown cast, is heart warming story spotlighting the culture of Chaoshan, in eastern Guangdong province. Logline: Xiaowei travels to Thailand to find his “billionaire grandfather” who out of contact due to debt problems, but unexpectedly find the one who has been corresponding with his grandmother for years is not her husband. Dear You has connecte with Chinese moviegoers given its themes of family and community connections. Per South Morning China Post, the pic has spurred tourism in the Chaoshan areas.

Devil Wears Prada 2 (Dis) 53 terr, WW $37.7M ($21.2M, overseas , $16.5M dom) WW Cume $608M ($408M int’l, $200M dom)/Wk 4The Anne Hathaway-Meryl Streep-Emily Blunt-Stanley Tucci comedy remains the No. 4 MPA movie around the globe so far this year and No. 3 overseas. Disney owns two of the top five MPA pics at the int’l B.O. As a reminder, the sequel is the top non-local release YTD in Italy (second highest grossing territory with $35.9M after $41M in the UK) and Brazil ($30.1M, pic’s third highest grossing territory). And the sequel is the second non-local release YTD in Japan ($25.6M) and Korea.

Obsession (Uni) 46 terr $39.2M ($8.9M int’l, $30.3M dom) WW Cume $81.9M ($21.2M int’l, $60.7M dom)/Wk 2 Yes, lots of profits…not just based off the original $1M production cost for the financiers of the pic, but for Universal’s ledgers as well after shelling out $15M for the pic. Pic was in play in 37 Uni markets ($6.5M weekend, $15.9M take) and eight non-Uni markets ($2.3M weekend including France, Australia and New Zealand, $5.2M total).
Openings in Uni territories include Saudi Arabia with the biggest horror opening of the year above Scream 7 at 128 screens with $506k. It has already surpassed the lifetime of Bring Her Back and is performing above The Invisible Man, Longlegs, M3GAN and Sinners. UAE also opened to the best horror debut YTD with $486K at 94 screens. Middle East counts $1.4M weekend with a further boost from holidays next week. Norway also saw the biggest opening for a horror pic with $260K at 140 screens ahead of Scream 7 and above Weapons, M3GAN, The Invisible Man, Get Out and Longlegs.
Holdovers include UK/Ireland where the pic was flat in weekend 2 with $1.7M an a $5.2M cume, gross in line with Heretic and Longlegs and above Hereditary, Speak No Evil and The Black Phone at the same point. Italy’s weekend 2 was $700K and a $1.8M cume surpassing lifetimes of Sinners, Get Out and Black Phone. Mexico’s second frame was $600K an a $1.5M, also holding muy strong, performing in line with Us and above Bring Her Back and Companion. Netherlands and Brazil are also top territories for the Curry Barker directed romance horror at $1M and $970K respectively.
6 The Sheep Detectives (Amz) 58 terr, $18.4M WW ($5.6M int’l, $12.8M dom), WW Cume $86M ($38.7M int’l, $47.3M dom)/Wk 3Yes, this family movie cost $75M, but Amazon is doing a great job with it as it holds in there.
7. Passenger (Par) 50 terr, $15.3M WW ($4.8M Int’l, $10.5M dom)/Wk 1 With Mando in the marketplace and an 85% offshore footprint, plus plenty of genre in the marketplace, this didn’t dazzle. Leave it to domestic to do any bailing out of this $15M André Øvredal directed movie) Mexico ($785K at 829 locations), UK ($440K at 330 locations), France ($420K at 205 locations; note Paramount’s Primate bowed $1.1M) Australia ($372K at 175 locations), Brazil ($225K at 365 locations), Italy ($240K at 208 locations), Spain ($204K at 204 locations), UAE ($95K at 47 locations in a total Middle East region take of $415k), Malaysia ($91K at 106 sites), Argentina ($80K at 156 sites), Netherlands ($80K at 54 sites) and Belgium with $50K at 50 locations).
8. Colony (4 terr, Showbox, Korea) $12.2M/Wk 1Mando and Baby Yoda skipped Korea this weekend (they’re going next), because this big local action zombie film from Yeon Sang-ho was opening. The pic had its world premiere in Cannes Midnight section. $9.4M weekend (72% of the marketplace) and near $11M cume in South Korea alone pushed Uni’s Michael to second place. Pic’s blurb: Professor Se Jeong, attends a biotech conference-only to witness it spiral into catastrophe when a rapidly mutating virus is unleashed. As the outbreak spreads and the infected begin to transform, authorities seal off the entire facility.
9. Drishyam 3 (Prath, India) 15 terr, $11.6M ($10.4M int’l, $1.2M dom), WW Cume $14.8M ($13.2M int’l, $1.6M Cume)/Wk 1 Jeethu Joseph directed and written crime drama about a successful author trying to cover up his past crimes from the cops and two reporters who are on his tail.
10. Mortal Kombat II (NL) 80 territories, $10.4M WW ($2.7M int’l, $7.7M dom), WW Cume $119.5M ($45.2M int’l, $74.3M dom)/Wk 3The Simon McQuoid feature take of the Midway Game is close to becoming the best in franchise, toppling the reported $122.1M global gross of the original 1995 movie.
