I Love When Celebrities Stan Other Celebrities

Stars, they’re just like us: They fangirl over other stars! (Or, sometimes, over themselves.)

The Story

Part of the appeal of being a celebrity, we’d argue, is the global adoration and sea of nameless fans that come along with fame. There is an unimaginable thrill to knowing there are thousands—if not millions—of people out there obsessed with your work. But one has to wonder. . . are stars ever stars to other stars? (Meta!) Do A-listers lose their minds at the sight of fellow A-listers? How does that work?

A quick trip down memory lane would prove that the answer is an unresounding yes. And to prove their own celeb-on-celeb adoration, many a famous person has stepped out in a cheeky tee that proudly displays said love for one another.

Just this week, for instance, Chloë Sevigny stepped out in New York wearing a tee plastered with images of fellow actor Hannah Einbinder. One perennially cool girl supporting another cool girl of the moment? You simply love to see it—especially because Hollywood loves to pit women against each other. On that note: Can someone please cast Sevigny and Einbinder in a film together? Is that too much to ask—are we reaching for the stars here?

Such a high-profile display of fandom has also spanned the last three decades. Back in 2000, for instance, Madonna went through a serious phase of wearing bedazzled tees bearing the names of fellow pop icons like Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue. (Nothing like the Queen of Pop giving you her stamp of approval.) In 2010, supermodel Claudia Schiffer also showed her support for her fellow super Naomi Campbell—by wearing a T-shirt of her at a Dolce & Gabbana event.

In 2014, there was even this whole saga where Ryan Gosling wore a tee of Macaulay Culkin; Culkin responded by wearing a tee of Gosling wearing the tee of Culkin; Gosling then wore a tee of Culkin wearing the tee of Gosling wearing the tee of Culkin—and so forth.

More recently, meanwhile, as the rise of paparazzi has taken over the streets of Hollywood, many stars have continued to rock kitschy tees for anyone and everyone to see. There is a strategic move to plaster their shirts with fellow notable names—almost as though to say, this is who I align with, and this is who has influenced me. Beyoncé has repped the musical legend Stevie Wonder; Rihanna has shown her love for Princess Diana, the people’s princess.

There is simply something charming about seeing stars adore other stars. It reminds us that they are human, no? That even they are not impervious to the art of stanning. Do you think any of them have Britney as their iPhone wallpaper, as this writer currently does? Probably not—but also not 100 percent impossible. Because clearly, stars, they’re just like us: They do fangirl!
