John Wells Renews Overall Deal at Warner Bros. TV as He Hits 40 Years With Studio

The Story

Prolific and Emmy-winning producer John Wells has re-upped his overall deal at Warner Bros. Television.

The renewal of the deal comes in a milestone year for Wells and the studio: He has been with Warners for 40 years and has produced hits across each decade of his time there. Wells’ current shows include The Pitt at HBO Max and Untamed at Netflix. He’s also executive producing Unaccustomed Earth for Netflix, based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collection; it’s set to premiere later this year.

As part of the renewal, Wells will continue to develop and produce series for Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO and HBO Max, other streaming platforms and broadcast networks.

Wells has won seven Emmys, most recently sharing in The Pitt’s win for best drama series last year. His tenure with Warner Bros. TV stretches back to his very first writing credits on the 1987 shows Ohara (ABC) and Shell Game (CBS). Since then, he has written and directed for and executive produced series including China Beach, ER, The West Wing, Shameless and Animal Kingdom, among many others. He has also twice served as president of the Writers Guild of America West, from 1999-2001 and 2009-11.
