The Story

Stuart will continue to fail in his efforts to save the universe as HBO Max has renewed The Big Bang Theory spinoff for a second season.

From creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady and Warner Bros. TV, the first season of Stuart Fails To Save the Universe is HBO Max’s second-biggest comedy launch ever globally, per the streamer. Not surprisingly, HBO Max’s biggest launch also was a followup to a hugely popular comedy series, Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That…

The renewal comes four episodes into Stuart Fails To Save the Universe‘ Season 1 run; episodes drop weekly every Thursday. The spinoff lives on HBO Max alongside the mothership series; both are exclusive to the Warner Bros. Discovery platform (in the case of The Big Bang Theory, for streaming only).

“We’re delighted with how this hilarious, genre-bending show from Chuck, Zak, and Bill has connected with the audience, both devotees of The Big Bang Theory and new fans alike,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series. “Along with everyone else, we can’t wait to see the worlds they conjure for these beloved characters next season.”

A single-camera, sci-fi take on The Big Bang Theory, the spinoff stars four alums from the hit CBS sitcom. It follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) who is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.

Those playing alternate versions of themselves so far have included Big Bang stars Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Mayim Bialik.

“Chuck, Zak, and Bill delivered something truly special with Stuart Fails To Save the Universe — a completely original take on one of the most beloved franchises of all time that captures the unique essence that made The Big Bang Theory so special,” said Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. “It’s been an absolute joy to see audiences embrace this next iteration so passionately, and we can’t wait to continue exploring the multiverse in season two.”

The series stars Kevin Sussman (Stuart), Lauren Lapkus (Denise), Brian Posehn (Bert), and John Ross Bowie (Kripke).

Stuart Fails To Save the Universe, from Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, is created, written, and executive produced by Big Bang creators Lorre & Prady and Penn. Kyle Newacheck is executive producer and directs multiple episodes.
