Tom Holland Was Finally Ready To Host ‘SNL’ & Face His Fear But “They’re Dark During The Summer”

Tom Holland was ready to guest-host Saturday Night Live amid his press tour for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the timing didn’t work out.

The actor recently revealed that he is “petrified” of hosting the NBC late-night sketch show because of his dyslexia and the need to read cue cards during the live show.

“At the beginning of the press tour, I said to the Sony marketing team — who have done such an amazing job on this tour, I really am so grateful to them — I said, ‘I’m ready to host SNL,’” Holland said during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “And then, they were like, ‘They’re dark during the summer.’ So, thank God!”

Meyers took the opportunity to introduce Holland to the person who handles the cue cards on his late-night show and the sketch show, telling the Spider-Man star, “He’d take good care of you. If the time comes, he’s the cue card guy. Whatever you need.”

Earlier on, Meyers recalled Holland revealing on SNL alum Amy Poehler’s podcast why he hadn’t hosted the sketch show despite being asked multiple times. Meyers echoed Poehler’s “instinct” to encourage him to take the gig.

“It’s the cue cards for me,” he said. “Like, I’m really dyslexic. And I just — there’s something about reading out loud that would just really stress me out.”

In June, Holland explained on Poehler’s Good Hang podcast why he had not hosted SNL, revealing, “I’m heavily dyslexic, which is one of the reasons why—and I’d love to talk to you today about it, actually—is why I’ve never done SNL. I’m just so petrified at the concept of, like, trying to read something and they change.”

He continued, “It’s just that, for me, I can read fine. But when I have to read out loud, it just becomes, a kind of… it’s like a mental block, and I can freeze.”

Holland added that he is “actually just really scared at the prospect—I love the show, and I love the idea of having fun and making a fool of yourself in such a fun, creative way. It’s just that thing of the cue cards.”
