Recent startup failures expose the gap between bullish growth forecasts and commercial realities in India’s secondhand fashion sector, where cultural taboos, fragmentation and limited scalability continue to thwart ambitions.

The Story

India’s resale pioneers haven’t had it easy. When Anvita Mehra and Jharna Gianchandani launched a designer resale platform in 2014, customers didn’t want their partners or family members finding out they were buying — or even selling — secondhand goods. “That’s how hush-hush transactions had to be,” recalls Mehra. So, the pair decided to turn that need for discretion into a selling point, naming the company Confidential Couture.
