Try the Romantic Wet Lash Look This Summer

A makeup artist on how to get the easy, high-impact look.

The Story

You know that moment in a rom-com, just before the characters passionately kiss in the rain? The heroine’s eyes are filled with yearning, her eyelashes glistening and ever-so-perfectly clumped? (See: Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Allie in The Notebook.) Luckily, you can recreate the look—no relationship drama or rain required.

“We’ve been doing the wet, clumped lash look on the runway for seasons and seasons,” makeup artist Cindy-Paula Rodriguez says. Just look at Christian Dior's fall 2016 ready-to-wear runway, which was inspired by a moment of transition for the house and used bold, clumped lashes for a strong, but feminine look. “It really gives a doll-like look to the eyes,” Rodriguez adds. Here’s everything you need to achieve it.

To recreate the appearance of wet lashes, all you’ll need is a lengthening black mascara and a pair of tweezers.

“The first thing you’ll do is apply the mascara like you normally would,” Rodriguez says. Then, use your tweezers to gently gather the ends in small, clumped sections. “You have to do this all while your mascara is wet, or else the lashes won’t stick together,” she adds, noting that she likes to start at the outer end of the eye. “I think it looks better [when] they aren’t perfectly aligned.”

For an extra rain-touched finish, add a bit of clear mascara or a very light moisturizer to the tips of your lashes using a clean brush. This will help them catch the light without being weighed down.
