‘Blade Runner 2099’ Sequel Series Sets Late Fall Prime Video Premiere; First Trailer Lifts Off At Comic-Con

Prime Video and Alcon Entertainment are aware that there’s a cult fanship for Blade Runner, particularly the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049, and are meeting that demand with the new limited series Blade Runner 2099, which takes place 50 years after that movie.

On Friday morning at Comic-Con, Prime Video dropped the first trailer to Blade Runner 2099 in Hall H and said it will stream on the service beginning November 25 in 240 countries and territories.

The series executive produced by Ridley Scott and produced by Alcon Entertainment (owners of the Blade Runner IP), takes place in a Los Angeles that has just been reborn, but not by humanity. Cora (Hunter Schafer), a human fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. She has but no choice but to partner with Olwen (Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh), a Replicant days from dying.

For the non-Blade Runner faithful, replicants are pungent androids who can create a lot of hell. Blade Runners are special police officers who track down and kill such synthetic humans.

“Replicants, they keep taking it all away,” says Schafer’s Cora in the trailer (watch it above), which is filled with all the rich, dystopian, flying-car production design that Blade Runner fans savor. “How much longer until we have nothing? Until we are nothing?” As such, as shown in the trailer, not only is it always a war between replicants and humans, but there’s always the question: are some humans replicants? In the series, Cora hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.  

Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy) are also series regulars. Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon), Tom Burke (Furiosa) and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley) are recurring guest stars.

Today’s Hall H panel included Yeoh, Schafer, series showrunner/EP Silka Luisa and EPs and Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

Additional EPs include Alcon’s President of Television Ben Roberts; David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions; Tom Spezialy; Richard Sharkey; Michael Green; Cynthia Yorkin; Frank Giustra; and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) is an EP and directed the first two episodes. Steven Johnson is co-EP.
