Billie Eilish Got a Major Mid-Century Makeover for ‘The Bell Jar’
On the Toronto set of Sarah Polley’s forthcoming adaptation of “The Bell Jar,” Eilish has gone full 1950s glam.
Billie Eilish has long been known for her laid-back, tomboyish style, with the pop star citing Tyler, the Creator and Missy Elliott as fashion inspirations. But these days, as she takes on the role of Esther Greenwood in Sarah Polley’s upcoming adaptation of The Bell Jar, Eilish is cutting a very different figure.
In photos from the Toronto set of the film, based on Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel, Eilish can be seen wearing a short-sleeved knit top in scarlet red; a full, A-line skirt in a jaunty check print; and, on the beauty front, a tidy side part and bold red lip. Though the look could not feel further away from her boxy Polo shirts and fetching Celine suits of yore, Eilish’s wardrobe for The Bell Jar does somewhat call to mind the Old Hollywood-inspired Oscar de la Renta gown that she wore to the 2021 Met Gala.
Set in the early 1950s, The Bell Jar centers on a young woman, Esther, who does a summer internship at a women’s magazine in New York City, before returning home to the suburbs of Boston and suffering a mental health crisis. (Carey Mulligan is set to play Esther’s mother in the new film.) It’s a powerful dramatic arc that we can’t wait to see Eilish take on; that it will likely mean seeing her in twin sets and pearls for the next few months is only a bonus.
