Marvel Studios has confirmed that a new Ghost Rider film is in development, with Ryan Gosling taking the wheel as the motorcycle-riding hero and Shawn Levy directing. Studio president Kevin Feige made the announcement during the studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, dating the project for a theatrical release in 2028.

For Gosling, the role reads less like a career pivot than a long-gestating ambition finally realized. “Wow. Is this really happening? As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time,” the actor told the Hall H crowd. He framed his participation around a single condition, adding that if the project was going to happen, there was “only one director who can do it.” That non-negotiable turned out to be a familiar collaborator waiting in the wings.

Levy, who steered Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine to blockbuster returns, joined Gosling on stage to seal the pairing. The director recalled the idea taking shape while the two were already deep in production together, noting that as Gosling started sketching out his vision for the character, the pair began riffing until Levy landed on a blunt green light: “Bro, let’s ride.” The exchange positions the film as an extension of a creative partnership rather than a one-off hire, with both men signing off on a 2028 arrival

That partnership is currently mid-flight elsewhere. Gosling and Levy are collaborating on Star Wars: Starfighter, due in theaters May 28, 2027, meaning Ghost Rider effectively becomes their second consecutive project and their first inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gosling, a three-time Academy Award nominee, brings prestige-tier billing to a comic-book antihero who has surfaced on screen before in earlier, non-MCU iterations. His arrival marks one of the higher-profile MCU castings to emerge from this year’s convention circuit.
