Has Demi Moore Finally Chopped Her Famous Hair?

The Cannes Film Festival jury member has let her hip-length raven locks fly free all week on the Croisette. Now, Demi Moore is sporting a soft new lob.

The Story

Demi Moore’s waist-skimming, raven-colored hair is her hallmark. Over the years, though, she was fearless when it came to a hair transformation: a pixie cut in Ghost, the G.I. Jane buzz cut, chic bobs, blonde bowl cuts, and bratpack-era up-dos, As Elisabeth Sparkle in the The Substance, Moore’s super-long tresses that she fusses over incessantly speak to the whorling themes of femininity, youth, and power. In real life, her extra-long lengths are transcendent.

Stepping out at Cannes Film Festival, where she is acting as a jury member, Moore debuted a lob. Styled by her go-to hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, her hair fell in soft, undulating brushed out curls to skim her collarbones, swept up at the crown for volume and height. It was about 15 inches shorter that the hip-length mane she sported on the Croisette across this last week.

Giannetos—who you’ll know for working with everyone from Kim Kardashian to Amal Clooney through their own color switch-ups and chops—used Kérastase Chronologiste and Elixir Ultime for healthy dimension and a glossy finish. The hairstylist dubbed this look the “De-Marilyn Bob.”

Makeup, by Raoul Alejandre, followed Moore’s signature glam sensibilities, with a sculpted cheek contour and softly diffused, posey pink blush. Her eyebrows were arched and defined, with brown eyeshadow beaten softly into her eye and lashes feathered out. Styled by Brad Goreski, Moore wore a custom cobalt blue Self Portrait gown with an oversized bow encircling the hips, falling into a train. They accessorized with a statement Swarovski necklace, pendant earrings, and matching ring.

Lob season is in full swing: earlier this month, Rosalía debuted a fresh “clavi-cut” courtesy of London-based hairstylist Larry King. A perfectly calibrated lob embodies a balance between sophisticated shape and everyday ease, making it perfect for the summer.

It’s not the first time Moore has employed the trick-bob/lob either. At Milan Fashion Week, where she attended Demna’s debut runway show for Gucci, Moore sported a dark chin-length bob with a swept-over side part, tousled with the ends kicking out at the nape of her neck.

“I wanted to give Demi Moore a major transformation for the first show of Demna at Gucci,” Giannetos said at the time. “I wanted to highlight Demi’s beautiful personality through the hair…iconic, fabulous, edgy, but at the same time, effortless.” In effect, the look was 22 inches shorter than her signature style, almost wet-look with how it shone.

Unlike at Cannes, the rest of her look also struck a tonally different note than what we’re used to seeing from Moore, who often revels in sculptural, super feminine codes as well as outsized takes on menswear. Showing up for Demna, she committed herself to the same leather-dom, body-contouring silhouettes we saw on the runway, wearing a second-skin leather jacket, and tight matching pants. Her micro-chihuahua, Pilaf, was her main accessory, along with a classic black bag and shield sunglasses.

Will Demi stay committed to this supposed chop, this time? More to come from the star at Cannes, and whether those raven-toned locks will fly free.
