How Wife Katie Thurston’s Cancer Battle Changed Jeff Arcuri & Shaped His Debut Netflix Special – Comedy Means Business Podcast

For comedian Jeff Arcuri, 2025 brought an uncommon level of emotional upheaval, presenting stunning turns, high highs, and very low lows.

By year’s end, Arcuri would record his first-ever comedy special, joining a prestigious shortlist of comics who have secured a Netflix deal for their debut hour. He’d perform the show in the round over the course of five sold-out shows at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, AZ — taping each one. But the complexity of executing there paled beside the far more consuming personal ordeal he and partner Katie Thurston had been living through for months.

2025 looked incredible for the couple at the start, with plans to travel Hawaii, followed by two months in Australia, a week in Tokyo, a month at home, and three months in Europe. But their time in Hawaii brought a stunning revelation: Thurston, of Bachelorette fame, had Stage 3 breast cancer and needed treatment immediately.

Thereafter, Thurston and Arcuri’s life turned upside down, becoming what Arcuri refers to as a process of “spinning plates.” Between apartments, they locked in a new spot in NYC from Hawaii, with Arcuri turning to his team to get shows rescheduled so he could be by Thurston’s side. Thurston was subsequently misdiagnosed with HER2-positive cancer, which would have necessitated immediate chemo — and this led the engaged couple to move up their wedding, conducting the ceremony in their empty new apartment with Arcuri’s agent officiating and only parents in attendance.

“It really, honestly at the time seemed like, ‘All right, this is temporary.’ But now I look back and I’m like, that was the f*cking best day, dude,” Arcuri reflects in an appearance on Deadline’s Comedy Means Business podcast. “Because that was the only sure thing I had in my life in the moment, was loving her, without a doubt. Everything else was so chaotic, but that was the sure thing.”

Throughout the spring and summer of last year, Arcuri was forced to spend time apart from his wife, honoring already-booked international dates as his wife continued treatment. This marked one of the most emotionally taxing passages of the experience so far, with the couple also navigating IVF during this stretch — and by December, Arcuri would have to figure out how to tell the whole story for his special, sharing his side of the cancer saga while acknowledging the fact that it was Thurston’s story to tell, first and foremost.

It was just a week before taping, while performing at The Wilbur Theatre in Boston, that he figured out exactly what he wanted to say, and how to say it. Flash forward, and Thurston is “doing so great,” Arcuri says, even if she continues to face her fair share of health hurdles. (She’s currently diagnosed as Stage 4.)

Not for nothing, Arcuri’s special is doing great too, having made Netflix’s Top 10 English TV chart with 1.3 million views in its first week.

To be clear, Nice to Meet You isn’t just a breakdown of Thurston’s cancer year; there’s plenty more to this conversational, interactive hour of comedy, although Thurston and Arcuri’s emotional personal story does end up becoming its defining element.

Of learnings from his experiences with Thurston in the last year and a half, Arcuri says, “I’ve learned that I’m capable more than I thought I was.”

He says he’s proud of himself “for not flinching” at the ordeal and taking it in stride, instead.
